There are many reasons to avoid going into starvation mode in attempt to drop a few pounds when you are trying to lose weight.
Negative Effects of Starvation Diet
When you do not feed your body anything at all, you will inevitably slow your metabolism, making it even more challenging for your body to burn any fat regardless of the amount of food you are ingesting. When you body stops burning fat and your metabolism slows completely, this is known as starvation mode. The body puts itself in starvation mode to preserve the fat you have on your body as it believes it will not be getting adequate amounts of nutrients to continuously stay working properly, thus, slowing itself down.
Some of the mental and emotional symptoms of starvation mode includes depression, an increase of worrying and stress, insomnia and even mood swings. You may also notice you feel nauseous, have bloodshot eyes, are constipated or even have low blood pressure when you are not eating properly. Irregular periods, sore throats and headaches are all additional symptoms that are common when your body is suffering in starvation mode.
Over time, you will also experience muscle loss when you put your body in starvation mode, causing you to lose the muscle you have rather than any fat you are trying to lose. You may also feel lethargic and tired most of the day when you are not providing your body with the proper nutrients it is craving.
An Alternative to Starving Yourself
Your body needs the proper nutrients to thrive, flourish and even to tell it when to burn calories while maintaining your metabolism. Your body needs food to survive and work properly, allowing you to burn maximum fat while maintaining the muscle you have (and adding more if that is your goal).
Choose fresh vegetable, fruits and even legumes and seeds as alternatives to white bread, pasta and fattening snacks. Instead, opt to make your own snacks at home. Ensure your body is getting enough calories from your fresh food alternatives each day. By avoiding the wrong foods, you can enjoy fresh vegetables and fruits at any time without feeling guilty or starving your body.
Incorporate at least 30 minutes to 1 hour of moderate to intense walking or cardio exercises to help with getting your body moving to increase your overall metabolism, keeping your body out of starvation mode while helping to burn the calories you take in and simultaneously providing your body with what it needs to thrive.
